I was thinking about this after I posted and it occurred to me that the reason magazines and other creative businesses are able to actually be work is that they shield the people who do the creative stuff from the normal pressures of a commercial business.

They have guys who manage budgets and generate revenue, but the people whose job it is to come up with cool ideas are left alone to get on with it largely without interference. They're not herded into a meeting room for an hour and ordered to be creative on the spot, in between doing a ton ordinary day to day office-job type stuff.

Great post and couldn't agree more. It is the duty of any PR angency worth its salt to recognise the business pressures of the agency but still strive to promote an enviorment where creativity is natural and not forced. While brainstorms are an important part of the business which allow us to 'officially' take time out to relax and think, the environment around us should always feel like a creative one. Thanks for posting

Hi Lance - great list of Twitter accounts and thank you for including our two accounts. The Sainsbury's @JSainsbury account is run by the corporate affairs team so can also be used as a point of contact for media requests.

Not sure how official the hsbc_com account is. I certainly do not think it is run out of the UK (or running at all by the looks of it). Some official ones that I am aware of at HSBC are

Thanks for the feedback Spikesterb.

Brett - I wouldn't expect all of the companies in the FTSE 100 to be on Twitter because it's just not going to be a suitable channel for all of them. But what is surprising is the uncoordinated and disjointed approach taken by some of the brands listed here. Can you imagine any FTSE 100 company being happy for its staff to randomly engage with the offline media without any sort of strategy or policy? Of course not, but that's exactly what's happening in social media.
